Background

Hales Freight have been in business for over 40 years, in that time nothing has been too big or small to move, determined  to give the customer the ‘very best service at the very best price’. In 2008, the company opened its 35,000 sq ft Dublin depot to receive and distribute the shipments for UK clients to everywhere in Ireland.

In a very competitive market, every opportunity must be taken to increase efficiency on the road and at its premises. A significant opportunity was identified in reducing the depot running costs by replacing older lamps and fittings with modern LEDs.

The main objective of the lighting redesign was to improve lighting illumination levels and achieve high quality colour rendering, as well as reducing electricity and maintenance costs.

Project Description

Waveguide Lighting Technologies ltd was approached by Hales Freight to conduct a site wide lighting installation audit. Significant saving opportunities were quickly identified and a lighting project implementation plan was put in place, with support from the SEAI pilot lighting scheme. The main objectives of this project were:

-    an increase in lighting levels in the warehouse
-    energy savings through reduced operating costs
-    improved lighting control
-    reduced maintenance requirements (particularly cost effective for high bay fittings).

The lighting originally consisted of 140 metal halide and fluorescent lamps. These were replaced with 109 LED luminaires or a 22% reduction in fittings numbers. To reduce electricity running costs further, Passive Infra Red (PIR) and daylight sensing controls were also installed throughout the depot.

Lighting schedule: Original design v Redesign

  • Warehouse areas - 58 x 400W metal halide lamps replaced with 27 x 207W Brightstar 209s (see photo)
  • Administration areas - 48 x (4x18W) fluorescent lamps were replaced with 48 x 33W LED Panels
  • Circulation areas - 20 x 2x18w CFLs replaced with 20 x 14W LED downlights
  • Stairwells - 6 x 28W 2Ds replaced with 6 x 14W LED 2D
  • External lighting - 11 x 400W metal halide floodlights replaced with 11 x 72W Starshot 203 LED floodlights

Waveguide carried out the supply and installation of all fittings using their own LED lighting products and electricians, in two weeks. Additional energy savings, particularly in the warehouse, were achieved through the installation of daylight sensing controls to maximise the use of natural daylight. Lighting levels were increased in all areas:

  • Warehouse areas –  from 70 lux to 150 lux (on average)
  • Offices – from less than 300 lux to 500 lux (on average)
  • External lighting – from 10 lux to 20 lux (on average)

Benefits

  • Energy savings of 83% and an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions.
  • Ten year warranty on all lighting products.
  • 132,000 hours rated life (L70) for LEDs.
  • No maintenance required.
  • Increased lighting levels and Colour Rendering Index (CRI)
  • High quality light uniformity, 5,000-5,700 K and a CRI of 80 – significantly enhances the working environment.
  • The payback on this project is 1.5 years before grants (9 months if all grants are included).Three financial incentives were available for this project, SEAI - 40% Pilot lighting scheme, utility provider energy credits  and the Accelerated Capital Allowance scheme.

Testimonial

The lighting levels are far superior to before, making it easier for us on the floor to operate safely.
